Southern Vermont is overflowing with natural beauty everywhere you look. The brisk Green Mountain air feels cooler, cleaner, and fresher. The scent of pine compliments the light that filters through the canopy, and every so often it opens up to a stunning view of the natural environment.

Bromley sits in the middle of it all, with trails and easy outdoor spots in every direction. Short walks, longer hikes, quiet stretches of woods, and open ridges with wide views of the Green Mountains.

Greener Summit

Bromley Summit Trail via Long Trail (AT)

5.6 mi. length | 1,414 ft. elevation gain

Bromley Mountain via the Long Trail (Appalachian Trail) is a steady, straightforward climb that pays off at the top. The trail moves through hardwood forest with a soft, shaded feel underfoot, then gradually opens up as you gain elevation. It’s not overly technical, but you’ll feel the climb in a few spots.

At the summit, the trees fall away and the views do the work. Wide, open 360° views stretch across southern Vermont, and on a clear day you can see well beyond. It’s a good, honest hike with a clear reward at the end. The Green Mountain Club's Observation Tower sits atop the summit, unlocking another 40 vertical feet and more stunning views.

Hapgood Pond Loop

Hapgood Pond Loop

1.2 mi. length | 65 ft. elevation gain

Just a short ride away from Bromley, adorned by the cozy town of Peru is Hapgood Pond. A beginner-friendly loop wraps around the pond just over a mile long. Enjoy beautiful views of the water and surrounding peaks on this relatively flat excursion.

Hamilton Falls

Hamilton Falls

5.8 mi length | 711 ft elevation gain

The walk to Ball Mountain Dam from Jamaica State Park is an easy, steady outing that follows the West River through a quiet stretch of forest and open water. The trail is mostly flat, with the sound of the river alongside you the whole way.

As you get closer to the dam, the landscape opens up and the river widens. The concrete structure sits tucked into the hills, a sharp contrast to the soft edges of the woods around it. It’s a simple hike, but a good one for slowing down, sitting by the water, and taking in a different side of southern Vermont.
